Location: The Cambridge Center of Adult Education

Anomaly is a documentary in production about multiracial identity.
Unlike prior works on mixed race issues that focus on one ethnic
combination, Anomaly is truly multiethnic-with participants from
backgrounds as diverse as Jewish and Chinese, Lebanese and Caucasian,
and Filipina and African American.

Through interviews, narration, performance and music, people of mixed
race share intimate stories about personal identity in a society of
racial boxes and categories. Multiethnic filmmaker Jessica Chen
Drammeh will present clips from this work-in-progress and will lead a
Q&A session. There will also be spoken word and musical performances
by slam champion Thaddeus Rutkowski, Boston Swirlie Pete Shungu, and
others to be announced.

On four Tuesday nights this summer, CCAE is sponsoring reading and discussion groups as part of Cambridge Reads: Cover to Cover. Description: Racial and ethnic identity are "hot" topics in multicultural psychology and education that are beginning to move beyond academia and affect the way people more generally think and talk about themselves. But race and ethnicity are almost always discussed, theorized, and explored in relation to "monoracial" people. How do we understand racial and ethnic identity in multiracial people? What can the experiences of multiracial people teach us about our society's understandings of race, ethnicity, and identity? More personally, how do we--as multiracial people--understand ourselves in relation to social understandings of race, ethnicity, and identity? What does it mean to you to be multiracial? Join us for a brief talk followed by discussion.

The Black Notebooks: An Interior Journey by Toi Derricotte. From Amazon.com:

Realizing that her light skin and "good hair" conspired to give her a unique, unasked-for perspective on the racial divide in the United States, African American poet Toi Derricotte inscribed her anguish in two decades' worth of journal entries. The Black Notebooks records countless moments when Derricotte was showered with offhand entitlements and racist confidences by whites who assumed she, too, was white. She speaks ambivalently of milking such moments, deliberately making end runs around her dark-skinned husband, Bruce, while looking for a home in an all-white suburb or hoping for a decent hotel room. Derricotte talks bluntly, too, of a self-loathing that accompanies being black in America and of not being "black enough." Her honest, angry, painful truth-telling veers into self-absorption and repetition, but perhaps that's fitting: racism hammers away at people in tiny and huge events repeated day after day. Says Derricotte, "My skin causes certain problems continuously, problems that open the issue of racism over and over like a wound."
